Instagram link tracking: how to see who clicks your bio link

Track every Instagram bio, story, and DM click with automatic classification. Country, device, revenue attribution on Pro.

Short answer: put a tracked redirect between your Instagram bio (or link sticker, or DM link, or story link) and the destination. Every tap hits the redirect first, gets labeled by platform automatically, and continues to your destination. Instagram itself will not tell you this; Instagram Insights stops at the tap count.

Where Instagram lets you put trackable links

  • Bio link. The classic one clickable URL on your profile.
  • Link stickers on Stories. Available to every account since 2021, no follower minimum.
  • DM links. Any URL pasted into a DM is clickable to the recipient.
  • Live stream links. During a Live you can drop a link that viewers see.

Any tracked URL works in all four places. Post-caption links are the exception: Instagram does not render URLs in post captions as clickable, so tapping is not a real path from a feed post.

What Instagram Insights actually shows about link taps

For a business or creator account, Instagram Insights reports bio-link tap count aggregated across your profile. It does not break down taps by which of your recent posts drove them, and it stops entirely once the visitor leaves Instagram. If the visitor buys something on the destination, Instagram cannot tell you.

How to actually track Instagram bio-link clicks

  1. Sign up for a link tracker. linksync is free for up to 5 tracked short links. You get a URL like linksync.me/l/aB3d pointing at your destination.
  2. Put the tracked URL in your Instagram bio. Or in a link sticker, DM, or Live comment. Same tracked URL works everywhere Instagram allows a link.
  3. Read the click log.Every tap from Instagram shows up labeled Instagram, detected from the in-app browser fingerprint (Instagram's webview has a distinctive UA string) or the referrer host.
  4. Connect Stripe if you sell. Attribute purchases back to the Instagram click. Setup is a one-time OAuth from /app/integrations.

What tracking shows once it is on

  • Instagram click count by day, week, or month. Not just the lifetime total Instagram Insights shows.
  • Country and device split per click. Where your Instagram audience is actually clicking from.
  • Instagram vs everyone else side by side. Compare Instagram traffic to your other channels in one view at /app/analytics#platforms.
  • Revenue per Instagram click on Pro. Sales attribute back to the click that started the session once Stripe or the tracker script is connected.

What tracking cannot tell you

  • Which specific Instagram post drove each click. The click carries the platform label but not the post ID. Instagram does not expose the source post in the referrer. Use different tracked URLs per campaign if per-post attribution matters.
  • Instagram Story link-sticker taps vs bio-link taps. Both are labeled Instagram. If you need to split them, put a different tracked URL in the story sticker versus the bio.
  • Anonymous identity. No tracker shows you which person tapped. Tracking is aggregate patterns.
